Coach Phil Beckner taught and coached “Driveway Workouts” during his presentation with NABC. As a player development coach and consultant to NBA and College Players, Coach Beckner shares valuable developmental skills for all levels. I was lucky enough to meet Coach Beckner during his time at Boise State University. I was able to watch practice, then chat with coach for a few minutes before watching his one on one workout with Chandler Hutchinson, who was a first-round pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. I’ve had the opportunity to implement drills from the Driveway Workouts presentation with our players at Idaho Falls High School over the last 2 months and have seen improvement in our ball handling and footwork. One thing I learned from Coach Raveling is that you don’t necessarily need to know the individual to consider them a mentor. I consider Coach Beckner a mentor and someone I learn from. I’ve included my notes below and highly suggest listening to the presentation here – https://nabc-championship-basketball-webinar-series.heysummit.com/talks/driveway-workouts/
Weak Hand Development – 100 Dribbles of Each
- Skill/Drill – pound (keep eyes straight ahead), twist (dig in with wrist and elbow), 2 high 2 low (bend legs not neck and back), swing (shoulders come across the body), 1 dibble – in and out (hard shakes hard moves keep the posture chin up eyes up in a stance)
- Teaching Points – break the floor, bounce the ball not your body
Lateral Movements/Band Work – Shoot the Deep 3
- Skill/drill – short lateral stops (5 each way), train track stops (sit down walk forward chin up chest up), jump and stick (jump off 1 foot and land on 1-2, it’s a shooting motion side step/step back), hip swivel/turns (half turns with feet hitting at the same time sitting down the entire time with eyes up)

Hall of Fame Footwork
- Skill/drill – side smacks (two hand pound dribble while shuffling – chin to shoulder, keep ball below shin to break the floor, ball to chase your foot), right foot pivot (hard dribbles chin to the shoulder with drop step, get square and get set – dribble on the drop step), left for pivot, alternating pivots (alternative right and left pivots chin up)
- Teaching points – chin to shoulder, full pivots full base, strong vs. fast reps
- 1 on 1 stance – the stance you would be in playing someone one on one – athletic stance, where are you on the catch/drive stance

- Teaching points – body and ball move together, high hard dribbles, on balance
- Spin Outs – right – left / left – right – Shooting drill – base and balance
- Skill/Drill – slow technique building (Spin the ball out into 1-2 catch turn ready to shoot – pause before the shot to emphasize), fast (same action but running), hard run through, jab, jab (spin the ball to catch then jab) – shoulder rip
