Coaches, players and basketball fans! Check out this Princeton Offense breakdown from the Richmond Spiders out of the Atlantic 10 Conference, led by Coach Chris Moony. This video highlights 5 out actions and different options from Point out of the Princeton offense. The Spiders are one of the best programs I’ve studied at flowing from one action to the next. In this video, notice the DHO read the guards are making as they pop behind the screen and shoot the three pointer against the under by the defender.
From the same game, the Furman Paladins, led by coach Bob Richey, also run action out of the Princeton Offense. In the first clip, you’ll see how to play out of the split against the switch. Furman uses the Wide Action to get into Point, a good mix up from the typical brush or forwards out entry. While Richmond guards were popping behind the screener and shooting the under, the Furman guards used the re-screen to force the defender back over and create the 2 on 1 advantage.
The Princeton Offense can be extremely difficult to defend when ran in space with pace. As players become more comfortable reading the defense and making the right play, this offense becomes very powerful. One misconception I’d like to clear up is that this offense is slow and doesn’t let players play. I think it’s just the opposite of that, giving players freedom to make reads based off how they are being defended.
